Packaging Machinery Industry Updates – August 2026: M&A,Trade Shows, and Green Regulations Take Effect

As August 2026 begins, the global packaging machinery industry faces multiple milestones. The core provisions of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) become mandatory across all 27 EU member states from August 12, while China's Ecological Environment Code takes effect on August 15, explicitly banning non-degradable plastic bags and other single-use plastic products. PFAS in food-contact packaging now faces stringent limits — individual non-polymeric PFAS ppb, total non-polymeric PFAS, and total fluorine ppm. The policy window has closed, accelerating demand for compliant packaging equipment.

M&A activity continues to heat up. On July 29, German injection molding giant ARBURG signed an agreement to acquire Dutch-based Stork IMM, with the transaction expected to close within approximately two months. Stork IMM specializes in large high-speed injection molding machines for thin-wall packaging, with clamping forces ranging from 2,000 to 20,000 kN. The acquisition will fill ARBURG's portfolio gap in machines above 5,000 kN and packaging-specific equipment. Earlier in July, Bedford acquired Tach-It to expand its automated packaging portfolio — industry consolidation is accelerating.

Patent innovations remain active. On August 1, China's National Intellectual Property Administration disclosed that Suzhou Huayuan Holding applied for a "three-material sheet conveying mechanism for three-mold cap production lines" patent; Guangdong Hengxin Intelligent Equipment received a patent for a "packaging box bottom folding system"; Beiyuan Chemical obtained a utility model patent for a "solid caustic soda packaging machine automatic clamp mouth shaping and conveying device"; and Dingjia Precision received a patent for a "labeling machine with cutting blade".

August brings a密集 trade show schedule: August 7-10, Hiplex 2026 in Hyderabad, India, where Ramcko Machinery will showcase bag-making solutions; August 21-23, FPackAsia2026 Guangzhou International Paper Packaging & Pulp Molding Technology Equipment Exhibition; concurrently, the Zhejiang Packaging Industry Exchange in Wenzhou; August 26-28, ProPak India 2026 in Mumbai; and August 25-28, ARBURG at Interplast 2026 in Brazil. PACK EXPO International 2026 is scheduled for October 18-21 in Chicago, with Formost Fuji, Quest, Syntegon, All-Fill, and many others already confirmed to exhibit.

The global packaging automation market is valued at approximately $84 billion in 2026.
